After a brief hiatus Caffeinated Frequencies is back! I’ve got some great music for you this week – opening with one of my favourite Captain Beefheart songs. As a side note, I found a music blog which takes its name from this track. I had a quick browse through the posts but haven’t listened to much of it yet. If you’re interested you can read more here

It’s Not How Far You Fall, It’s the Way You Land is an album I highly recommend you check out. Many of the tracks feature vocals from Mark Lanegan. If you love your ears you should get all of his records.

The set ends with one of my favourite versions of “Summertime”, courtesy of Janis Joplin. The track was recorded live at Woodstock and can be found on the 1999 reissue of her album I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!.

As a point of interest; this show was recorded and put together using my MP3 player so there may be a slight reduction in quality, hopefully no one will notice.

As promised; below is a recipe I found a while ago for Espresso Martinis! There are two variations on the recipe, both of which are very easy to make

Make enough espresso so that there is one shot per person. Pour ingredients into shaker filled with ice, shake vigorously, and strain into chilled martini glass. It should be a little frothy.

Version 1

Espresso Martini
1 oz espresso
1 1/2 oz Absolut vodka
1 1/2 oz Kahlua coffee liqueur
1 oz white creme de cacao

Version 2

Espresso Martini
1 oz espresso
1 1/2 oz Absolut vodka
1 teaspoon of sugar

Top off with a couple of espresso beans as a garnish.

Thursday, 13 January 2011 - Second Transmission

The second transmission is up and running. A little bit of a theme going on with this one – a show devoted to some of my favourite Irish bands. The set opens aggressively with a track from the mighty Therapy? and then sashays smoothly into a track from Kerbdog’s 1997 album “On The Turn” called “JJ’s Song”. The song is named after JJ Cantwell from Jerusalem Taxis, another Kilkenny band. Kerbdog also covered a Jerusalem Taxis song called “Something In My Head” which I believe you can find on the B-Side of the “Dry Riser” 7” vinyl (little bit of useless information for you there).

In my haste to record the voice over parts I made some mistakes, but instead of recording again I’m just going to correct myself here. The name of the Bats album is “Cruel Sea Scientist” (not the Cruel Sea as I said in the recording). It is a fantastic album that I highly recommend.

As for the other mistake, well let’s see if anyone can spot it!

Five Go Down to the Sea (named after the book by Enid Blyton) made some fantastic music. If you’re a fan of The Fall you should check out the rest of their stuff, as well as their previous incarnation Nun Attax. The radio documentary I mentioned during the show can be found here.

The Charlie Don’t Surf track came from a CDR that I was given a while ago. Unfortunately, the quality isn’t great but you can check out more of their funky tunes on the MySpaces right here..

I was of two minds about whether or not to play The Walls “Broken Boy” track but decided to stick with it as it mellowed things out after Jinx Lennon’s crazy antics.

Finally the set closes with “Emerald” by Thin Lizzy. There is a niggling thought at the back of my mind that the song was written in honour of Jimi Hendrix, but I’m not positive. Either way it’s a cracking song and a great way to end the show.

Thanks to all who listened to the first transmission. The feedback so far has been very positive. As long as people are enjoying the shows, I’ll keep doing them.

I’d like to start of the coffee section of the blog with a very easy, straight forward coffee recipe to enjoy while listening to the music – a Nutella Mocha!

A quick blast in the microwave will help the Nutella melt a bit easier into the espresso. Also, mixing the Nutella and Espresso in a large coffee mug then pouring in the milk makes the process easier.

Nutella Mocha

1. Two or three shots espresso
2. One heaped teaspoon of Nutella
3. Half cup of hot milk

Instructions:
Make some fresh espresso. Stir in Nutella, smashing it against the sides of the cup to ensure it is mostly melted and dissolved into the coffee.

Add milk to mixture, stir and enjoy.

Very quick and easy.
